Rupert Gatfield sets out to at once seduce and confound the expectations of his viewer. A quick glance at his paintings may offer a nostalgic colour combination here or the sculptural curve of something seemingly familiar there. But on closer inspection one discovers these initially reassuring signals and symbols are no longer keeping to the path. His paintings are not for calming and/or forgetting –a two-way work out with the viewer to distract or unsettle.
The free spirit collection features paintings with a bold wild spirit; a sense of freedom to create a spontaneous expression of the emotion at the time of painting, which is then poured out onto the canvas and shown in the explosion of vibrant exciting colours. Free Spirit No 15 acts as the perfect example in exploring the displacement of muted reds, yellows, blues, whites and greens to express the artist’s fascination with colour to express feeling.
