I’d Rather Be Happy Than Dignified depicts a Baroque style portrait of woman, clothed in rich attire, exploring the interaction between power and fragility. Over her face, Gjoen has scrawled childish clown features in black ink. A modern day homage to Marcel Duchamp’s Mona Lisa, the artist captures the irony of the art-world, where Gjoen in his own unique style finishes off the piece with a textured gold leaf on lime green background.
