Magnus Gjoen is a London-born artist with an impressive fashion background, having studied fashion design in London and Milan and having worked for Vivienne Westwood amongst others. Gjoen takes inspiration from street and pop art fusing it with fine art, to question beliefs about religion, war beauty, destruction and art. His art is simultaneously at once uplifting and damning; a salvation for a godless generation. Updating old masterpieces and presenting them in a new way has always been Gjoen’s prerogative, where he expertly manages the balance between old and contemporary.

Like a kaleidoscope, ISHTAR presents a perfectly symmetrical image, set against a jet-black disc. At the center of the circle sits a skull, surrounded by stag beetles, where their intertwined legs create a delicate, spider web-like design. Made up of Baroque floral patterns focusing on pink, white and green, the skull and insects melt into the inky black background set against another contrast of gold, referencing to life and death, a key motif in the artist’s works.
